A security clearance is a status granted to individuals allowing them access to certain government establishments and to information that is classified “Secret”, after completion of a thorough background check. A clearance by itself is normally not sufficient to gain access; the organization must determine that the cleared individual needs to know the information. No one is supposed to be granted access to classified information solely because of rank, position, or a security clearance.

Clearance is checked at four levels, depending on the classification of materials that can be accessed — Counter-Terrorist Check (CTC), Baseline Check (BPSS), Security Check (SC), and Developed Vetting (DV). Security Check allows an individual long-term unsupervised access to protectively-marked SECRET material, whilst for TOP SECRET Developed Vetting is required. All Officers and some specialist trades within the Canadian Armed Forces are cleared to SC to enable them to carry out their jobs. Those with security clearance must usually sign the Official Secrets Act.

Historically, Cisco has acquired firewall technology in 1995 during acquisition of Network Translation. For years Cisco PIX appliances were one of the most popular firewalls in the world, until it was replaces by Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance in 2005. Eventually, Cisco announced end-of-sale for PIX in 1990.

Adaptive Security Appliances introduced significant performance improvements, new security features as well as Cisco ASDM (Adaptive Security Device Manager). ASA devices can be extended by additional security modules that can provide extended layer of protection mostly designed for data centre networks. IPS (Intrusion Protection System) is often being used first line of defence for DOS and DDOS attacks which are very common in many industries including online gambling and media.
